Oldham Netball Club's Premier League side suffered their first defeat in over two years

17/11/2013

Oldham Netball Club's Premier League side suffered their first defeat in over two years on Sunday when they visited Twickenham based side The Downs. It was a battle of the top two sides in the country, which resulted in the three point loss 38-35.

The game started slowly for Oldham, with The Downs turning over their first centre courtesy of a quick three second violation by Oldham shooter Krista Enziano, and converting it to quickly take the lead. Oldham's attack struggled to get the ball down the court through the close attentions of the home sides defence, wasting the few turnovers that Oldham could create. After the first quarter the scores were level at 9-9.

Oldham welcomed some experienced players into their squad again for this game, due to Oldham having an under 16’s fixture earlier in the day, it was an opportunity for some of the North West Premier League players to play alongside Alice Travis, Helen Housby and Kerry Almond. It was also great to have Bryony Rhodes in the squad for the first time and Bryony had been training well therefore started the game at wing attack for Oldham.
Oldham had a fantastic start, great feeds into the circle for Travis and Neild, good shooting and great turnover by Gabrielle Marshall. Oldham won the first quarter 20 goals to 5

The victory was not always comfortable for Oldham as they had a very shaky start finding themselves trailing by four goals at the start of the first quarter. Oldham's defence were caught sleeping and Oaksway were finding their shooters with ease. At the other the end the home side attack were struggling to give accurate passes.Half way through the first quarter the tide quickly changed and Oldham found form and quickly moved through the gears and scored an eight goal flurry without an answer from the away team. The quarter finished 16-9.

Team Bath sink as they fail to hold Oldham

3/11/2013

Oldham Netball’s Premier league side made the long trip to third placed Bath on Sunday and brought home a solid 56-32 win.

A strong starting 7 for Oldham took hold of the game in the first quarter and never looked like losing despite a very early start. Oldham’s attack were looking strong against an experienced Bath defence. Shooters Kathryn Turner and Alice Travis were clinically despatching any turnovers that Oldham gained throughout the court. The quarter finished 16-7 in favour of the away side.

Coach Debbie Hallas opted to switch things a little in the second quarter with Georgie Webster on at GD and Helen Housby entering at GS, but the changes did little to halt Oldham’s flow. Beth Cobden at WD was the catalyst for Oldham, creating and taking interceptions in defence. At half time Oldham extended the lead 27-13.

Oldham were delighted to have Krista Enziano in the squad this week for the trip to Merseyside, especially with the support she provides to the younger players in the squad. Coach Suzy Chapman was looking for a fast start from the young Oldham size. However, it took a while for the attack unit to settle down and feed shooter Enziano the right ball, although Amy Neild was the exception to the rule and carrying out her coach’s instructions. Oldham were slow to get to loose balls and only scored from 33% of their turnovers. As the quarter went on they start to find form and scored seven goals in a row, making a comeback and winning the first quarter 14-8.
