Oldham secured their third Premier League title in a row and a little piece of history when they defeated Blades 62-60 in Southampton. Oldham became the first team to win the trophy three times in the new Premier League format, plus they were missing 11 players who were not available due to Manchester Thunder’s Monday night’s Superleague fixture.

With their new look Oldham took time to settle in the first quarter and gave Blades an early lead, but led by captain Rachael Taylor and centre Gabs Marshall they started to find a rhythm finished the quarter up by one goal 14-13.

At quarter time Coach Debbie Hallas made some early changes bringing 16 year old Amy Neild on at goal attack, while Alice Travis moved to goal shooter. The change added some movement to the Oldham attack and feeders Maria McAndrew, Marshall and Neild were finding Travis with ease. Oldham won the quarter by four goals, taking their lead to five overall.

Oldham 54 The Downs 41

12/3/2014

Reigning champions Oldham took a massive step to retaining their Premier League title by defeating second placed The Downs in a highly anticipated clash at Hathershaw Sports Centre winning 54-41.

Earlier in the season Oldham suffered a disappointingly loss by three goals and handed The Downs the advantage in the league. But with recent result going Oldham’s way they would only need another one point in their remaining two games to secure the Premier League Division One title for a third successive year.

Oldham were without a five of their England players as they were on rest, plus defenders Jodie Gibson and Sara Hale were both suffering from slight concussion following their clash of head in the Manchester Thunder match the day previous. However, the difference for Oldham over the last few seasons has been their strength in depth but a good start would likely set the tone for the match and Oldham stamped their authority early on and were dominating. Shooters Kathryn Turner and Alice Travis were unstoppable missing just one goal from 18 attempts and restricting The Downs to just 11.

Throughout the season Oldham Coach Debbie Hallas has used her bench to good effect but she stuck with her starting seven going into the second quarter. It was key that Oldham piled on the defensive pressure to stop the ball into England's Goal shooter Rachel Dunn. The Downs came out fighting in the second fifteen and the quarter went goal for goal. A time out towards the end of the quarter allowed Hallas to try something new bringing on Rachael Taylor and moving Marshall and Henry forward into centre and wing attack. The second quarter was a draw and at half time Oldham led 28-21.

Oldham 63 Oaksway 44

4/3/2014

With only four games left of the current season, and Surrey-based The Downs breathing down their necks, the reigning champions are taking each game as it comes in their quest to retain their Premier League Division One title. No opponents can be underestimated in the Premier League and the tripfurther north to Oaksway is always a tough one.

Oldham’s notorious slow start has been a focus for coach Debbie Hallas, however, true to formOaksway took an early 2-0 advantage before Oldham had even got out of the blocks. It took both teams a few minutes to settle as passes and shots were going astray. However, defender Jodie Gibson did her utmost to kick Oldham into gear and her turnovers were rewarded as Oldham started to convert their chances and they edged the first quarter 16-11.

At quarter time Hallas looked to her bench to make a few changes. Rachel Henry took the court at wing attack and Australian import Alix McDermott made her Premier League debut at goal attack. Oaksway came out firing in the second quarter and disrupted any flow that Oldham found. Loose passes through the court were picked up by Oaksway and Oldham saw their lead start to disappear. But Oldham with their dominant defence of Gibson, Emma Dovey and Georgie Webster kept Oldham in the game to draw the second quarter, at half time Oldham led 28-23.
