Oldham 64 Oaksway 39

18/11/2014

Another northern derby faced the defending champions as Oaksway made the trip to Hathershaw. Oldham welcomed back Helen Housby to the squad who has been away with England on international duty.

Oldham have been struggling to get a good start and maintaining it over the past few weeks so this was going to be a focus for the home team. The team started strongly and they were 5-0 in the first couple of minutes. It took the visitors time to get used to the speed of the Oldham attack with Kathryn Turner and Rachel Henry moving the ball quickly to into Housby at goal shooter. The visitors did start to find a bit of a rhythm but the Oldham defence were making it difficult for them to get the first ball out. A high scoring first quarter saw Oldham build a lead of 19-8.

The Oldham coach Debbie Hallas reshuffled the back a bit with Marshall coming on at centre and Beth taking the wing defence position. The changes took some time to settle and the ball struggled to move through the court as freely. A time out by Henry in the quarter allowed a few words from the bench to be exchanged which seemed to do the job. This was a stronger quarter for the visitors who seemed to have upped a gear and restricted Oldham to just 13 goals, at half time Oldham led 32-17.

At half time it was key that Oldham continued to pile on the pressure in defence and keep up the same intensity in attack. Alice Travis was introduced to goal shooter and Housby moved out to goal attack, providing a lot of height in the circle. In this quarter the inexperience of the Oaksway attack showed and Emma Dovey and captain Kerry Almond forced them into mistakes. Marshall at centre was finding some great space through court and bringing the ball into the attack well. This was another high scoring quarter for Oldham and the lead was stretched out further to 50-25.

Going into the last quarter Almond was replaced by Dovey at goal keeper and Turner replaced Henry at wing attack. Again the changes to time to settle and Oaksway were pushing for goals so they could secure a losing point for scoring more than half. Oldham seemed to have slowed down in both attack and defence which allowed Oaksway more opportunities. Oldham finished the game drawing the last quarter with a final score of 64-39.

There is a week off for Oldham however they then face a difficult trip to New Cambell in Essex who they drew to last season.

Coach Debbie Hallas: “It was great to welcome back Helen Housby from England duty and she played her first full game since the Grand Final. I was pleased with the performance and we are building momentum going into a crucial game against New Cambell, always a tricky opposition.”

Oldham finish up against The Downs

11/11/2014

Oldham Netball Club's premier league side faced a tough The Downs side on Sunday in Surrey.

Despite question marks over whether the game would go ahead or not due to a last minute venue change, Oldham started brightly matching the home side goal for goal in the opening quarter. Strong defensive pressure from Rachel Henry and Beth Cobden was creating turnover opportunities for the circle pairing of Emma Dovey and Kerry Almond, however, Oldham didn’t take advantage of this and were unable to convert. The quarter ended 14-13 in favour of The Downs.

Coach Debbie Hallas opted to bring Georgie Webster into wing defence and moved Cobden forward to centre. The change made a difference with added height in defence and Oldham won more ball from longer failed feeds into the circle into the home side’s 6'5 shooter. Dovey and Almond were linking well, picking off the wayward feeds. Alice Travis and Kathryn Turner were shooting strongly, offering good movement away from the defensive pressure being placed on them, with good back up being offered from Maria McAndrew on the edge of the circle. Oldham led 26-23 at halftime.

With a convincing win last week against Warrington, Oldham was rearing to go for the game against Leyland. Leyland was sitting in third position so Oldham knew it was important to come out hard at them. Oldham was focussing on maintaining possession, which didn’t look like they were achieving in the first quarter as they kept losing the ball. With many turnovers mainly from Gemma McDermott and Jess Dale, Oldham could not take the ball to goal, which Leyland took advantage of.  Oldham trailed 5 goals to 2 in the 5 minutes of the game due to their errors, so they really needed to dig deep. Oldham’s defensive game was strong all the way through the court, however their attacking game was a different story. With mistake after mistake creeping in Oldham needed to settle down and play their own game. Taylor Cullen suffered a finger injury, this gave the team a breather to think about what the strategy was. Cullen and Rachael Taylor swapped positions and the game continued. Oldham improved slightly in their attacking game and scored 4 goals in a row, which allowed a come back at Leyland. Oldham managed a win in the first quarter by 1 goal, score after the first quarter was 8-7.
