Oldham v Capricorn - NW Premier 2016

27/10/2016

Final score – 57-38 Oldham won
Starting 7 and squad:
GS Chloe Shepherd (73%)
GA Isobel Hallan (81%)
WA Lucy Shepherd
C Ebbie Danson-Chappell
WD Abigail Tyrell
GD Zoe Mallinder
GK Vanessa Luamba
Joely Ferris
Rachel Fitzsimmons
Oldham travelled to this away game against Capricorn having not played them before as they have just come up to the NW Prem league. Oldham came with a depleted, but strong  and determined squad regardless.  Oldham had strength all through the court. Oldham scored the first 3 goals of the game and with Capricorn struggling to feed the circle over Abigail Tyrell’s arms, Oldham started strong. The 7 red and blue players stood strong and played the Oldham way and it definitely paid off.
The team stayed the same this quarter after their excellent performance in the first quarter. Ebbie Danson-Chappell kept her composure throughout the quarter, controlled the attack and consistently delivered excellent feeds into the not missing super shooters Isobel Hallam and Chloe Shepherd. Oldham continued to apply pressure on Capricorns attack and did not make it easy for them with Vanessa Luamba and Zoe Mallinder bossing the circle with some great team work and connection. Oldham remain in the lead at half time.

Third quarter introduced Joely Ferris to WD and Rachel Fitzsimmons GK. Tyrell went to GD, Shepherd and Hallam switched round in the shooting circle.  Lucy Shepherd stayed at WA and was playing superb in Oldham’s attacking third, which continued in this quarter also. Oldham let a few errors creep in with some complacent feeds going down court and not finding space, but they soon rectified it and maintained their lead.

Final quarter, Luamba came back on at GD, Hallam and Shepherd switch round again. Ferris and Fitzsimmons continued to make it difficult for the opposition and didn’t let any changes affect Oldham’s performance. The shooting duo continued to finish of some great passages of play and overall the game was dominated by the red and blue side, with the game finishing with a convincing win by Oldham 57-38.

Quote:
Coach Suzy Ashworth
“Everyone stuck to task and played the game we set out to play, I was really pleased with everyone’s performance today especially Ebbie Danson-Chappell who controlled the attack and played with confidence. The girls played like a team and kept their composure all the way until the end”.

Oldham earn convincing win over Worcester Reds

24/10/2016

It was an early start for Oldham who travelled to the University of Worcester for their first away game of the season against newly promoted side Worcester Reds.

The first quarter was tightly contested by both teams, going goal for goal in the opening 7 minutes. However, a dominant last half of the quarter by the steady partnership of Almond and Dovey, pressured Worcester Reds into key errors. Oldham's attack were quick to take advantage, going on a run of 5 unanswered goals and ending the quarter 7-16.

Oldham picked up where they left off and continued to dominate in the second quarter, with a string of unanswered goals. Short and sharp play from Gabby Marshall, Iona Darroch and Kathryn Turner proved too much for the Worcester defence, with Mizuno player of the match Amy Clinton finishing off the moves with calm and accurate shooting. Oldham extended their lead to 20, with the half time score at 16-36.

Coach Debbie Hallas made changes going into the second half with Krista Enziano coming on at GS and Abby Tyrell on a GD. Marshall switched to WD and Dovey moved to the less familiar position of C. The quarter was much like the first with the two teams going goal for goal until Oldham settled into a rhythm and worked their way through the gears.

The final quarter saw more changes, with Suzy Armstrong replacing Almond at GK and youngster Amelia Hall making her debut in premier league 1 for Oldham at WA. Hall settled into the game quickly, feeding some excellent balls into Enziano and Turner in the shooting circle. At the other end of the court Taylor Cullen worked tirelessly at WD to stop the Worcester attack and dampen the spirit of the loud home crowd. Final score 40-62 to Oldham.

The focus now moves to the next game against The Downs at Oldham Leisure Centre next Sunday. It is sure to be a physical and challenging game for the red and blue of Oldham.

Coach Debbie Hallas said: “Worcester asked us a lot of questions today both physically and mentally. I was pleased with our discipline and even more so the type of netball we were playing. Amy Clinton was a class act in the first half and was deservedly given the Mizuno player of the match. Gabs Marshall and Taylor Cullen were impressive in the mid-court while the Worcester defence couldn’t cope with the speed of Iona Darroch.”

Squad: Kerry Almond, Emma Dovey, Abby Tyrrell, Susie Armstrong, Taylor Cullen, Gabs Marshall, Iona Darroch, Amelia Hall, Kathryn Turner, Amy Clinton, Krista Enziano

Starting 7 and squad:

GD Taylor Cullen
GK Zoe Mallinder
Sarah Brennan (67%)

Player of the Match – Zoe Mallinder
This was Oldham’s first game in the Northwest Champs league for a few years. It is a really exciting year this year with so many talented players playing in both the Northwest Prem and the Northwest Champs league. Oldham started very well and turned Chester’s first centre pass over and managed to score off the turnover. This allowed to Oldham to convert 2 goals and get an early lead.  Oldham continued their good from in the first quarter and the defence trio Ebbie Danson-Chappell, Taylor Cullen and Zoe Maillinder were a force to be reckoned with. They got 15 interceptions in this quarter which is amazing. Score at the end of the first quarter was 21-8 to Oldham.

Apart from Luci Stevenson and Chloe Shepherd switching round, the team stayed the same going into the second quarter. Again Oldham started well and got 5 unanswered goals early in the quarter.  Victoria Austin created some fabulous feeds into the shooters allowing them to comfortably put the ball in the net.  The red and blue side continued to set up effectively and work together as a team, which was great to see so early in the season. Score at the end of the second quarter was 39-18.

Tameside 36 v Oldham 57

4/10/2016

Picture
Oldham Netball Club's premier league division one side kicked off their campaign with a comfortable 57-36 away win over local rivals Tameside, but they didn't have it all their own way.

Tameside started off strongly and punished a few early Oldham errors to take a short lived lead in the first few minutes of the game. Once Oldham finally hit their rhythm newly promoted Tameside could do nothing to stop them. Taylor Cullen was strong at WD and was giving the Tameside attack a lot to think about. Whilst in the attack, Kathryn Turner was unstoppable at times, taking on the home defence with ease.
