Oldham were delighted to have Krista Enziano in the squad this week for the trip to Merseyside, especially with the support she provides to the younger players in the squad. Coach Suzy Chapman was looking for a fast start from the young Oldham size. However, it took a while for the attack unit to settle down and feed shooter Enziano the right ball, although Amy Neild was the exception to the rule and carrying out her coach’s instructions. Oldham were slow to get to loose balls and only scored from 33% of their turnovers. As the quarter went on they start to find form and scored seven goals in a row, making a comeback and winning the first quarter 14-8.
A few changes were made going into the second quarter with Rebecca Hope moving to wing attack, Gabrielle Marshall followed suit and moved upto centre with Charlotte Spence being introduced at wing defence. Spence had played well in the previous game and coach Chapman wanted that to continue and so it did, Spence had an immediate impact by intercepting Halton’s centre pass. This gave the team confidence. The new attacking unit was working well and Marshall managing to find Enziano with some well-timed feeds. Unfortunately in this quarter Oldham allowed Halton to get 4 goals in a row, but Gemma McDermott put a stop to that by getting the first three interceptions in this quarter, Oldham won the quarter 12-9.
At half time Sarah Brennan came on at goal attack providing an experience shooting partnership with Enziano. Brennan adapted really well when playing with Enziano and created great space for the centre court team to feed the ball into Enziano’s space. Oldham tightened their defence through court and put the early feed into Enziano going into the third quarter. Oldham managed to score seven unanswered goals in this quarter, assisted by some great turnovers by McDermott, Spence and Marshall. The through court defence was stronger and Oldham started to pile the pressure on Halton. With Oldham continuing their excellent team performance they won that quarter 14-8.
Ebbie Danson-Chappell came back on at wing attack for the final quarter, her feeds were finding Enziano in great space to put the ball in the net. Oldham’s second phase off the centre was flowing well with Brennan and Danson-Chappell. Jess Dale made the ‘Interception of the Game’ in the last quarter making it Oldham’s 25th turnover of the game! Marshall finished it off by making the ‘Pass of the Game’ into Enziano, which was superbly placed. Player of the Match had to go to McDermott in this game who played fantastic throughout the four quarters. She made eight interceptions and constantly pressured Halton’s attack. Oldham stormed the last quarter winning by 10 goals 14-4 making the final score 55-29.
“I was really pleased with how the players made changes to their game whilst on the court and was taking responsibility in order to adapt their play. It was great to have Krista playing for us. Once again I was impressed with the team performance and every week they are improving as a squad. We have another tough game on Sunday and some key strategies that we will be taking on board ready for Leyland.”
