GS Amy Clinton GA Sarah Brennan WA Gabrielle Marshall C Rebecca Hope WD Rachel Taylor GD Kate Smith GK Jess Dale Bench: Abigail Tyrell, Amy Neild, Ebbie Danson-Chappell and Gemma McDermott | Bury is always going to be a tough fixture and they have a lot of experienced and excellent players. Going into this game, led by Rachael Taylor as captain, we wanted to watch our ball placement, get quick turns down court to enable us to look forward initially. Our focus was to have a fast start and that we did by scoring off 75% of our centres. |
It was great to have Gabriella Marshall back in the NW Premier League squad for this game and she certainly made an immediate impact on the game even with her playing in an unfamiliar position! Shooting was excellent and between both shooters they scored 87% of their shots. At the end of the first quarter the score was in our favour at 19-13 to us.
With the strong squad of 11 for this game, the coaches made some changes at quarter time Gemma McDermott came on at GD, Marshall went to C and Ebbie Danson-Chappell went to WA. Oldham’s defensive wall continued to be a success on Bury’s centre passes and the defence as a unit managed to turn many balls over. It took a while for the attack to settle after the changes and also a new combination that hasn’t played together needed to gel. After a few forced balls and a bit of panicking, we managed to settle down and win that quarter by 7, which took us to 35-22 up.
Going into the third quarter Amy Neild came on at GA, Hope came on at WA, Smith to WD and Tyrell to GK. It was a new position for Rebecca Hope and it is a great opportunity for her to develop her skills at a different position at WA. Her vision and knowledge of the game will enable her to fit into this position. Becca was with familiar players such as Amy Neild and Amy Clinton and after a few mix ups on the centre passes, she got into the new position and made an impact for the attacking unit. Her feeds into the circle were, as always, accurate and fast. Unfortunately we let Bury get 3 goals in a row in this quarter. However looking down court early was better in this quarter and the feeds continued to find the shooters by Marshall and Hope. Amy Clinton definitely had velcro on her hands today, managing to keep many balls in court scoring from them. End of this quarter Oldham were in the lead 50-32
More changes going into the final quarter of the game including Danson-Chappell at WA, Hope on at C, Marshall back to WD, Abby Tyrrell at GD and Dale back on at GK. The two Amy’s continued to show class through excellent rotation, movement and shooting. Their overall shooting average in this quarter was 86%. The feeds from Danson-Chappell and Hope continued to be strong in to Neild and Clinton. Strong defence led from Jess Dale at the back allowed us to continue to turn ball over for our attackers to finish the game off. Oldham had 6 unanswered goals at one point in the final quarter! Tyrrell was making it difficult for the shooters with her long arms, and Dale was taking some risks by off lining balls outside of the circle, which is great to see from a youngster. Again my feedback to the players was it was a great TEAM performance once again! Main things Oldham will be working on this week is pressuring every first ball. Pam and Suzy find the Man of the Match decision difficult in this game, but they finally agreed that Rebecca Hope was MOM for her superb feeds, being effective in a new position, coping well with the pressure and being consistent over the three quarters she played.
Final score 68-43
