Oldham wanted to continue their winning start to the season. Oldham knew Blackpool’s attacking duo, both ex-Oldham players, Rachel Bramhall and Charlotte Carroll were going to be tough to break down, but Oldham’s defence were well prepared in their strategy. Oldham were keen to improve their turnover to goal rate from their previous game against Bury last week. Oldham took time to settle in the first quarter and didn’t’ play to their strengths initially. With some challenging feeds going into Amy Clinton at GS Blackpool took advantage in their shooting end and managed to beat Oldham by one in the first quarter scoring 13 goals to Oldham’s 12.
Changes were needed for Oldham, Amy Neild went to GA and Susie Armstrong came on at GK. Gemma McDermott proved to be a leading captain and starting to generate turnovers for Oldham, which Oldham worked down the court and scored. It was Susie Armstrong’s first game for the North West Prem side for Oldham and what a game it was, Susie made it very difficult for the Blackpool shooting duo and caused them to make errors. Armstrong was quick to pick the loose balls up and this lifted the Oldham side who certainly found their form in this quarter. With less errors creeping in for Oldham and Clinton and Neild on shooting form, Oldham brought the score back and went ahead winning the second quarter 17-8 bringing the score to 29-21 to Oldham.
Changes for Oldham going into the third quarter were Taylor Cullen came to C, Victoria Austin WA, Ebbie Danson-Chappell at WD and Abigail Tyrell at GD. Oldham was hard to beat in the defensive third with the height, strength and determination from Armstrong and Abigail Tyrell. Oldham attack become more patient with the feeds into the strong Clinton. Turnover after turnover for Oldham it was important that the team looked after the ball and made key decisions which they did in order to score from the turnovers. One in particular turnover was made by Armstrong, it was a superb, incredible offline interception by the 15 year old. Oldham scored off everyone of their turnovers, which was an improvement from the first 2 quarters. It was the first time Oldham scored 5 goals in a row in the game, which made the side confident to a final success in this game. Oldham won this quarter 19-9, which brought the score to 48-30.
Going into the final quarter, Oldham did not want to get complacent in any way. Some changes were made including McDermott taking the GD bib back, Ebbie Danson-Chappell going to WA and Victoria Austin at WD. Tyrell went back to GK. Oldham started the quarter well scoring 3 goals in a row and Neild taking more opportunities in the circle to put the ball in the net. Clinton continued to please the crowd with some accurate shooting whilst Taylor Cullen putting a lot of pressure for Blackpool’s centre court players. A pleasing performance overall with Oldham coming out on top winning the fourth quarter 14-8 taking the final score to 62-38.
Suzy Chapman quote:
“After a rocky start we managed to find our way. We had been working some new play for some players, so I think it is just getting used to it and settling in. I knew it was going to be a tough fixture like they all are in this division. I was extremely pleased with Susie Armstrong’s performance, not just her continued pressure on Blackpool’s attack but the confidence to hunt for the ball and come out with the intercepts was just superb. Still not overall happy with our turnover to goal rate, but we will keep working on it.”
