Oldham Netball Club

Oldham 55 v 36 Manchester

30/11/2016

Quarter one was a slow start for Oldham with the game going goal for goal for the majority of the first seven minutes. However, Oldham had a great run of goals in the latter stages of the first quarter scoring seven unanswered goals. The shooters were in no doubt of their role and continued to score the opportunities they were given. Oldham led at the end of the quarter 15 - 6.

Amy Neild came to WA for the red and blue side in the second quarter and the defence trio had a shuffle round;  Zoe Mallinder to WD, Amber Hazelton to GD and Susie Armstrong to GK. It took some time for Oldham to settle into the quarter and the Manchester defence did their job in Oldham's shooting circle doubling up on Chloe Shepherd, which Oldham needed to adapt to quickly. Oldham started to become static and hesitant with the ball in the goal third, which allowed Manchester to come back at them and gain momentum through court, with little challenge from Oldham. Manchester forced a draw from the quarter so Oldham maintained their nine goal advantage 25 – 16.
In the third quarter, coach Suzy Ashworth rang the changes, Isobel Hallam, Amy Neild, Eleanor Fellows and Joely Ferris were introduced at GA, WA, C and WD respectively. While Mallinder moved back to GK. The game went goal for goal for a long period of time until Oldham managed to pull away with four goals in a row. Oldham adapted well to the two on one defence set up in the shooting circle, and Hazelton was a force to be reckoned with in Oldham defensive circle. However, Manchester still had the upper hand and continued to maintain their structure through court. After the third quarter and after another close score, Oldham were still in the lead 34 - 27.

Going into the final quarter Victoria Austin came back to WA and Fellows to C. Oldham started very well and the continued the flow through into attack. Hazelton dominated in the defence circle and got some crucial interceptions for Oldham, who managed to capitalise on them. Oldham took a greater lead in this quarter winning by 12 goals taking the final score to 55-36.

Ashworth commented: "The game was a mixture of a performance today there was some great passages of play and also some hesitancy. However, overall the shooting statistics and turnovers have improved since the last game. Some good individual performances again, particularly from Amber Hazelton, who dominated in defence".
