The match started with trepidation and errors from both sides, Warrington took the first initiative but a goal from Amelia Hall soon settled the nerves for Oldham. Oldham's defensive pressure was a force to be reckoned with and turned the ball over to allow the attack to get more chances. It was goal for goal until Oldham managed to score five unanswered goals, which took them into the lead after the first quarter 13-7. |
The home side had the first centre and again it went straight to goal however, errors again gave Warrington an opportunity to come back and they took it scoring six goals in a row. Oldham had to show leadership and take responsibility on the court, but no team could pull away and with Oldham allowing Warrington to come back it was a one goal game. Oldham did manage to maintain a slight lead at the end of the second quarter. The score was now 22-18 to Oldham.
Oldham made some changes going into the third quarter, Hall went to C, Lucy Shepherd came to WA and Sarah Brennan to GA. Oldham did not settle with the changes and Warrington scored the first 3 goals of the game taking the score within two goals. Oldham was not capitalising on the turnovers that the defence were making, particularly by Gemma McDermott in GD. However Oldham settled and really started to work together and scored eight goals in a row which allowed them a five goal lead taking the score to 33-28.
Fourth quarter the team stayed the same and for both teams it was all to play for. With composure and thinking clearly under pressure. Oldham stretched their lead to eight. Warrington did keep coming back and closing that lead down putting Oldham under pressure, but Oldham showed determined until the final whistle and came out on top with the final score 42-38.
Coach Suzy Ashworth said:
"It was important today that we worked hard for 60 minutes, to keep our composure and stick to task, we did this for most of the game against an extremely tough opposition. It could have gone either a few times in the game, but we maintained the lead we had worked hard for and came out with the result we wanted at the final whistle".
