The team looked focussed going into the warm up and ready to go. Oldham lost the toss for who’s first centre it is, so Tameside started the game off. Oldham managed to turn Tameside’s first centre over and going 2-0 up in the early stages of the game with Lucy Stevenson on point as usual. In fact Oldham turned over Tameside’s first 5 centre’s which is a superb effort and particularly because of the pressure Rachael Taylor applies on the centre pass defence set ups. Jess Dale was a force to be reckoned with at the back for Oldham, turning the ball over and applying a lot of pressure. Oldham scored 8 unanswered goals in the first quarter taking the game away from Tameside’s reach winning the quarter 20 goals to 6. |
Oldham made some changes going into the second quarter, Amber Hazelton came to GD and Katie Bodha to WD. Although Oldham scored the first three goals of the quarter, Tameside began to come into the game and play their own game. Oldham allowed them to get out for centres and we made some mistakes in the attack, forcing the ball across court. When goal machine Stevenson got the ball, there was no hesitation of what was going to happen, straight in the net, Stevenson scored 100% of her attempts. Tameside won this court by four goals taking the score to 34-24
Going into the third quarter Rachael Taylor came back on at C, Gemma McDermott to GD, Susie Armstrong to GK and Hazelton went to WD. Oldham settled straight away in this quarter and was making it difficult for Tameside to play their own game again. Oldham kept their intensity all the way through this quarter achieving 8 goals in a row again at the end of the quarter, which shows they continued to perform up until the whistle. Oldham scored off everyone of their turnovers that came from Hazelton, McDermott, Susie Armstrong and Taylor. A good performance all round, Oldham won this quarter by 12 goals taking the score to 53-31.
Fourth quarter saw Bodha come on at C, Iona Darroch at WA, Victoria Austin to GA, Armstrong to GD, Dale to Gk. Oldham maintained their intensity and continued to turn the ball over including Stevenson getting 2 turnovers in this quarter and scoring from them. All in all a great performance and a great result from Oldham. The final score was 74-37
Suzy Ashworth quote: “I was really pleased with how the team started the game, we wanted a fast and strong start and that is what we had. We came out of the blocks on fire. Unfortunately, we didn’t keep this up in the second quarter, but managed to pull it back in the third and fourth quarters. It was a great game and great netball played from all players. A particular mention to Jess Dale who played superb, she stuck to the game plan and came out with turnovers in every quarter she played. Well done to Lucy Stevenson, a well deserved POTM for being consistent and scoring an incredible 55 out of 58 goals. We have a week off now with no games, but will be ready for our next game against Blackpool on Saturday 24th October”.
