Oldham Netball Club

Oldham turn-over newly promoted Turnford

26/10/2014

On Sunday, Oldham Netball Club hosted newly promoted Turnford. The home side were looking for their fifth straight win to consolidate their position at the top of the National Premier League.

Despite a depleted squad the red and blue started strongly, taking a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter. A lapse in concentration allowed Turnford to get back into the game, before Oldham began to pull away again. Some strong defensive play by Georgie Webster and good shooting from Krista Enziano and Kathryn Turner saw the home team end the quarter 18-9 goals up.

There were no changes for the home side heading into the second and Oldham again started brightly, taking the first few goals of the quarter, despite some heavy defensive pressure from the away side. Laura Malcolm was linking play between Oldham's defence and attack with some neat play in the centre court, whilst putting the Turnford attack under pressure, forcing turnovers for the defence to pick up. Oldham took a commanding 31-19 lead into the second half.

Oldham travelled to Trafford wanting to remain unbeaten. Oldham knew Trafford were going to be a tough fixture with the experienced players they have in their squad. Oldham had a promising start by scoring the first goal from Trafford’s centre pass. However from then on  Oldham made hard work of the first quarter unable to feed the accurate ball into the shooting circle, rushing the ball through the court and not converting the turnovers made. It was a new squad for Oldham with Alice Travis and Rachael Taylor coming into the team for this game, so it took a while for Oldham to settle. Score after the first quarter Oldham was trailing 10 goals to Trafford’s 12.

Oldham Open the Gap at the Top of the Premier League

14/10/2014

Academy 35 Oldham 63
A trip away to second placed Academy was the first real test for reigning Premier League Division One Champions Oldham, the game wasn’t going to be easy with Academy also undefeated. Difficult trips away to Academy in the past meant that Oldham Coach Debbie Hallas was demanding consistency in performance all over the court.

Oldham took an early lead in the first quarter with the attack finding in-form shooters Kathryn Turner and Krista Enziano with ease. Enziano struggled to get her eye in at first but with plenty of opportunities Oldham found themselves leading 8-3 halfway through the first quarter. The defence were working well to force Academy into mistakes and were preventing their attack from forming any rhythm. Oldham were playing some fast-paced netball, true-to-style, but complacency with the final ball meant they didn’t increase their lead and at the end of the quarter and the lead stayed at five, 14-9.

The second quarter saw Hallas introduce Rachel Henry into the attack and Georgie Webster into the defence. Academy started the quarter strongly forcing Oldham's shooters to shoot from further out. No team seem to be able to find their flow and ball seemed to switch possession too easy. Both teams seemed frustrated not to be able to take hold of the quarter and the quarter finished level. At half time Oldham led 25-20.

Oldham wanted to continue their winning start to the season. Oldham knew Blackpool’s attacking duo, both ex-Oldham players, Rachel Bramhall and Charlotte Carroll were going to be tough to break down, but Oldham’s defence were well prepared in their strategy. Oldham were keen to improve their turnover to goal rate from their previous game against Bury last week. Oldham took time to settle in the first quarter and didn’t’ play to their strengths initially. With some challenging feeds going into Amy Clinton at GS Blackpool took advantage in their shooting end and managed to beat Oldham by one in the first quarter scoring 13 goals to Oldham’s 12.

Oldham's Pressure Ensures Hucclecote Buckle

5/10/2014

Oldham Netball Clubs Premier League side defeated Hucclecote on Sunday 54-30 to remain top of division one with three wins from three.

The home side made hard work of the first quarter, with the feeds into the shooting circle not hitting the mark and the defensive unit not adjusting to the umpire’s dislike of contest. Hucclecote capitalised on some of the uncharacteristic errors to take an early lead, before Oldham clawed back and took the game goal for goal, eventually going into the break one goal up.

Coach Debbie Hallas opted to make no changes for the second quarter and the seven on court repaid the faith with some outstanding netball. The reigning champions showed why they are so formidable with a 20-5 quarter. Gabby Marshall and Beth Cobden started to assert themselves in the mid-court, with some fantastic tips and interceptions and slick interplay through the court linking well with Maria McAndrew. Shooters Kathryn Turner and Krista Enziano were in imperious form with only one or two shots not hitting the target. Oldham led at the half 31- 14.
