Bench A Clinton A Neild A Tyrrell | Coach Debbie Hallas opted for a settled seven to start the game, knowing that local derbies tend to be fairly heated and well contested. Unfortunately for this one that was not the case. Oldham dominated from the off with the defence working solidly to restrict the Leeds shooting pair to only a handful of shots, snapping up any rebounds and loose balls that came their way. Meanwhile the shooting circle was firing, taking balls and sinking shots with ease. Oldham eased into a 15-6 lead at the first break. |
Oldham Netball Club succumbed to their first loss of the season on Sunday, losing a nail biting game 44-45 to Academy.
The first quarter was the difference for Oldham. The home side started brightly, with turnovers, but the attacking end failed to click with stray passes and loose shots. Academy's attack were playing some strong and quick netball and their defence were out muscling Oldham's shooters in the early part of the game, taking an early 6-1 lead over the hosts. Some neat play from Oldham saw them close the gap to two goals, but the momentum was short lived and Academy stretched out to take a 16-11 lead at the break. Marvellous Martin shoots 32 from 32 to make it three wins from three for Oldham Under 14s10/11/2015
Oldham made two changes at the start of quarter two bringing Eve Parker into Goal Keeper and bringing Berri Neal into Goal Attack to partner Alex Martin at Goal Shooter. Oldham's attacking continued to be sublime scoring a further 17 goals with 100% accuracy leaving the half time at 33:5.
Quarter 3 saw Oldham make several changes at GK, WD, C, WA and GA. Oldham continued with the same ruthless shooting accuracy until Hannah Fletcher missed Oldham's only missed shot of the game. This quarter ended 46:10. Quarter 4 saw Oldham make several more positional changes whilst maintaining their ruthless attacking performance, producing another perfect shooting display (13 from 13). Hannah Cusack continued to be dominant in defence turning several balls to help keep Leyland to just 2 goals scored. The final whistle brought the game to an end at 59:12. Alex Martin scored 32 from 32 (100%), Berri Neal scored 11 from 11 (100%) and Hannah Fletcher was 16 from 17 (94%). Hannah Cusack was awarded player of the match for the sheer number of turnovers during the game. Player of the Match: Hannah Cusack Match Report - Sunday 8th November 2015 U16s Regional - LSA vs. Oldham Oldham U16s travelled to Leyland for the second game in their Regional group. After a slightly shaky start, Oldham ended the quarter with 9 goals to Leyland's 3. The second quarter saw U15's player, Vanessa Luamba's, debut for the U16s as goal attack. The second quarter showed a growing confidence in the Oldham side as they pulled ahead with a score of 21-5 by the half time whistle. Half time changes saw Eleanor Fellows play at centre and Katy Rothwell at Wing Defence, providing a strong centre court attack and defence and, at the end of quarter 3, Oldham had scored 35 to Leyland's 7. The final quarter saw 100% shooting stats from Jade Purkhardt and Vanessa Luamba as Oldham continued to control the game finishing with a win of 49 - 10. Player of the match was Eleanor Fellows. Squad: Emma Fairclough, Eleanor Fellows, Joely Ferris, Vanessa Luamba, Zoe Mallinder, Jade Purkhardt, Mia Robinson, Katy Rothwell, Alicia Scholes, Lucy Shepherd. (Injured: Isobel Hallam).
Going into the second quarter, Katie Bodha came on at WA. Oldham continued their fast start and made it really difficult for Trafford’s defence. Trafford’s shooters were on point, scoring from anywhere in the circle, so were Oldham’s shooters, both scoring 100% of their shots. Oldham continued to turn the ball over and making it very difficult for Trafford’s attack to get out for centre passes. Unfortunately after only 5 minutes into the quarter, Rachael Taylor took a tumble and twisted her knee and had to come off. Ellie Fitzhugh made her debut and replaced Taylor at WD. Oldham took a while to settle back in, but they soon did and another impressive performance by the red and blue side, taking the overall score to 35-17.
Third quarter and coach Ashworth made some changes, Fitzhugh went to GD, Ebbie Danson-Chappell came to C, Kimberley Meadows to GS, Lucy Stevenson to GA, Bodha to WD and Victoria Austin came back on at WA. With a lot of changes, it could have affected the structure of Oldham’s play, but it didn’t, Oldham got into the game straight away and again we saw the turn overs coming in especially from Armstrong at GK. Oldham played some fast netball down court and with their quick turns began to release the ball and get it to our shooters. Oldham won the third quarter by 12 goals taking the score to 63-21. Fourth quarter, Gemma McDermott came back on at GK, Armstrong came out to GD, Fitzhugh to WD, Bodha to C, Danson-Chappell to WA and Austin to GA. Oldham had some moments of brilliance and also some moment of errors. They allowed Trafford to play their game at parts, but Oldham managed to hang in there until the final whistle and win the last quarter by 2 goals, taking the final score to 64-32. Suzy Ashworth quote: “I was really pleased with everyone who played today, they all put out a performance. I was really impressed with how many ‘team’ turnovers we got today due to the whole team forcing errors. Well done to Susie Armstrong she had a cracking game and was first to the rebounds and turned the ball over 12 times throughout the game. We hope Rachael Taylor has a speedy recovery with her knee and gets back soon”. Next game will be a tough one against Warrington on Saturday 7th November away. Oldham Netball Club's premier league side took a hard fought five points when they faced Oaksway in Hartlepool on Sunday.
A strong seven from both sides led to a cagey opening with goals and turnovers traded fairly regularly, until Oldham finally took hold of the game. Some strong play in the defence from player of the match Emma Dovey and Kerry Almond on the home side's shooting pair allowed Oldham to carve open a lead, with Maria McAndrew feeding well into the shooting pair of Kathryn Turner and Krista Enziano. They led by two at the first quarter break. No changes going into the second quarter and Oldham ramped it up, taking the game by the scruff of the neck with some great pressure from Taylor Cullen and calm play down court by Amy Neild. Oldham's defence was working overtime and the centre court were working quickly and fluidly against the solid defensive pressure from the home side. Enziano was contending with some strong body contact in the circle but was working well to create space and take some good feeds. At half time Oldham led 25-14. Coach Debbie Hallas, opted to bring Abby Tyrrell and Iona Darroch on for the second half and the changes didn't affect Oldham. They continued to work hard, keeping the gap between the two sides. Some wayward shots allowed Oaksway to cut the deficit but some great play and an intercept from nowhere by Darroch took it back out again. To keep the lead solid going into the last. It was a low scoring game, with the last quarter a goal for goal affair. Some outstanding though court work from both sides and some missed shots were the order for that final 15 minutes. But Oldham held on to take the win 47-36. Coach Hallas said: "We ground out a win today, our shooting circle were given a tough time and our stats suffered for it. Kerry Almond and Emma Dovey were solid in defence and turned over plenty of ball, I was also pleased with the substitutes that came on, Abby Tyrrell and Iona Darroch. They both had an impact which is what I ask of them. My player of the match today was Emma Dovey." Starting seven: GS K Enziano GA K Turner WA A Neild C M McAndrew WD T Cullen GD E Dovey GK K Almond.
