Oldham 55 v 41 Worcester Reds

31/1/2017

Table topping Oldham Netball Club took another step towards reclaiming their National Premier league title with a hard fought 55-41 win over a physical Worcester Reds side on Sunday.

Oldham started strongly flying out of the blocks into a 5-1 lead with Abby Tyrrell and Susie Armstrong providing strong defence across the third line, backed up Maria McAndrew in the middle. Amelia Hall was producing another solid display at WA and was running the show with precise feeds into Oldham's shooters, Krista Enziano and Kathryn Turner.

Oldham had a momentary blip in the middle of the quarter but Enziano and Turner were cool under pressure, keeping the home side out of reach to lead 19-12 at the break.

Coach Debbie Hallas opted to bring on Ebby Danson-Chappel in place of Tyrrell and the change took a while to settle in. Armstrong and Kerry Almond were working hard in defence to challenge and stop the strong physical shooting pairing of the away side, turning ball over at much needed points in the quarter. Reds took the quarter by one but Oldham still led strongly at half time. 33-27.

Oldham rang the changes for the second half as Lucy Stevenson, Emma Dovey and Tyrrell replaced Turner, Almond and Danson-Chappel, and Amy Neild making her season debut to replace Hall. Oldham steamed ahead taking the first 5 goals in the period, and after that Reds never really threatened again, despite a few minor blips for the home side. Oldham increased their lead heading to the last 44-33.

One final change for the last quarter saw Hall head to GA in place of Stevenson and the change worked immediately, with the youngster creating more space for Enziano to work with, but also working hard to provide link up play with Neild and McAndrew. Armstrong and Dovey were working well and kept Oldham ever further away from the away side. A strong finish saw Oldham take the game by 14 goals.

Armstrong took the player of the match award but there were strong performances across the board and coach Hallas could be happy with her sides step up in the face of some overly physical play.

She said: "It was a mixed performance from us, we started on fire as I asked for but we took our foot off the pedal in the second quarter. We had to make many changes throughout the game due to Superleague players being limited. As the game went on we adapted better to the changes, player of the match, Susie Armstrong continues to improve with every game while Amelia Hall never stopped running all game and slotted in seamlessly at goal attack for the last quarter, with a 100% shooting record too."

Oldham 53 v 43 Leeds Athletic

9/1/2017

Picture
Always a keenly contested fixture with their arch rivals from across the Pennines, Oldham took their first win of 2017 with a 53-43 win over Leeds Athletic.

It was Oldham who started the brighter, with some fast movement through court by Maria McAndrew and Amelia Hall, supplying shooters, Krista Enziano and Kathryn Turner with opportunities, which they scored with ease, once again showing their almost telepathic understanding, to which the Leeds defence had no answer. At the other end of the court, the Oldham defence stemmed the flow of ball though to the Leeds shooters with some excellent pressure from Susie Armstrong, Emma Dovey and Abby Tyrell at Wing Defence. The quarter ended 19-9 to Oldham.

Kerry Almond replaced Susie Armstrong at Goal Keeper and Oldham continued to build their lead. Leeds moved their experienced defender, Lauren Potter, from Goal Keeper to Goal Defence in an attempt to stop Oldham’s flow but the home team continued to apply pressure winning the quarter 15-12 and taking a comfortable 34-21 lead into half time.

Changes at half time saw Lucy Stevenson replace Kathryn Turner at Goal Attack and Susie Armstrong took over from Emma Dovey at Goal Defence. Oldham’s through court play had slowed down and they were finding it difficult to deal with the physicality of the Leeds defence. Leeds began to come back into the game, although some unforced errors from them saw the quarter drawn 10-10.

More changes saw Kathryn Turner return to Goal Attack with Lucy Stevenson replacing Krista Enziano at Goal shooter, Emma Dovey moved to wing defence in a further attempt to nullify the Leeds attack and Ebbie Danson-Chapel took to the court in the Wing Attack position, giving Amelia Hall a well-earned rest.

Oldham had lost their way a little. Ebbie Danson-Chapel had a fine premier league debut and was busy in centre court but it was Leeds who could sense a comeback and quickly transitioned the ball to their shooters, who had now found their range, at one point scoring six consecutive goals. Uncharacteristic mistakes from the home team saw Leeds win the quarter 9 – 12.

Although the outcome was never really in doubt, Oldham made it hard for themselves and were happy to take the five points to start the new year.

A special mention should go to Krista Enziano with shooting stats of 30/32 (94%) and, player of the match, Maria McAndrew, who once again showed great energy and creativity in mid court and put in another solid performance for her team.

Coach Debbie Hallas commented: “We fired out of the blocks today, we wanted to get out in front early which is what I asked for especially after the Christmas break, and put Leeds on the back foot. This enabled me to get the whole squad on court and valuable court time for our younger players. Maria McAndrew was outstanding today, her quick thinking decision making is amazing to watch. Krista Enziano and Kathryn Turner also put in great, leading performances in the shooting circle.”
