Oldham Netball Club

North West U14 vs Warrington

16/12/2014

Oldham U14s travelled to Warrington to face another Cheshire based team in their third regional game this year.

Oldham got off to a brilliant start as Warrington struggled to handle the quick pace of Oldham's attack and the ball found the circle with ease complimented by great shooting from Mia Robinson and Rosette Luamba.  At the back the defence started well and were forcing turnovers from the Warrington attack, however a few unforced errors meant that Oldham were unable to score from them leaving the first quarter with Oldham leading 10-3.

In the second quarter changes were made to the Oldham shooting circle with Hannah Fletcher at goal attack and Rebecca Tudor at goal shooter, both U13s took to the court with confidence and the feeds into the circle were relentless and again so were the goals. Oldham started to dominate without a real answer from the Warrington team.  Eleyna Flitcroft and Olivia Woodcock worked tirelessly in defence and the home side struggled to get the ball into the circle. Amira Mirza and Alicia Scholes worked together to stop the ball getting into the circle and were quick in bringing the ball through to the attack. At half time Oldham extended the lead to 23-9.

With a comfortable lead at half time Oldham brought on debutants Jess McDermott to wing defence and Laura Mallinder to goal keeper both key players in their own U13 age group. At the end of the third quarter Oldham pushed further ahead 34-13.

Going into the final quarter Oldham looked to their bench again as they changed the shooting circle, Hannah Fletcher going  to goal shooter and Mia Robinson was back on at goal attack.  The last quarter saw Oldham really put the pedal down, the speed, pace and accuracy of the ball meant Oldham had their highest scoring quarter. Warrington had become tired and looked bewildered as Oldham scored goal after goal. The combination of Robinson and Fletcher worked well together in the circle and  some great vision from Scholes and Olivia Gilbertson meant the Oldham attack were unstoppable.  Olivia Woodcock was awarded player of the match for her countless interceptions in defence. It was great to try out combinations and win each quarter convincingly.

Oldham 58 v Worcester Red 28

16/12/2014

In Premier League division one, all teams have now played each other and Oldham find themselves sitting nicely at the top of the league unbeaten. A travelling Worcester Reds had a great chance to turn over the current champions, who were depleted due to five players being on duty with England A.

In the first quarter Oldham did what they do best, start poorly. The home side found themselves behind for the majority of the first quarter as Worcester came out of the blocks hard and fast. This seemed to be a shock to the home side all over the court and their seemed to be no connection through the court. However Oldham did not wait until quarter time to fix things and started to find their recognised quick flow. After a shaky start the Oldham attack were patient in their attack and found the ever reliable shooting force of Kathryn Turner and Krista Enziano under the post. Oldham scraped an early lead after quarter one 11-10.

Oldham were going into this game with confidence after beating Chester last weekend. It is always going to be a tough fixture against Tameside and the girls knew they had to put a great performance out today. Oldham looked strong with the squad they arrived with and were hoping that they would take their strengths on to the court. It was the last game of the year until January so Oldham wanted to finish on a high. The first quarter Oldham started slow, mistakes creeping in and the attack taking a bit of time to gel and work together. A couple of mistakes such as repossession and cross court balls being intercepted it was goal for goal. There was no stopping the Tameside shooting duo who were shooting very well.  Oldham defended Tameside centre pass very well creating a solid wall, which allowed Oldham to convert on Tameside’s centre passes and gain a lead. With some superb defending by Victoria Austin and some great feeds into the circle made by Amy Neild, Oldham started to pull away and won the first quarter 17-9.

Clash of the Table Leaders

2/12/2014

Oldham Netball Club’s premier league side headed to Essex on Sunday to face New Campbell. It was a clash of first place versus second place in the table.

Oldham had a depleted side after much of the team contended the Mike Greenwood Trophy for Manchester Thunder the day before. They ended up with only eight players available for the game, but those eight players contributed to one of the champions best performances of the season.

They started strongly with shooters Kathryn Turner and Alice Travis converting easily from any turnovers which Oldham created. The home side were feeding their shooter with accuracy making life tough for the Oldham defence. But Kerry Almond and Georgie Webster were forcing some errors with some high pressure on the Campbell attack. The quarter ended in favour of Oldham 20-12.

Coach Debbie Hallas made changes for the second quarter with Gabby Marshall dropping to the bench after feeling unwell. Abby Tyrrell came into goal defence and Webster moved to wing defence. The changes had an immediate impact with Webster stemming the influence of the Campbell wing attack and Tyrrell forming a solid partnership with Almond in the circle. Almond was beginning to pick off some of the feeds into the shooter and the ball flowed easily through court with Rachel Henry and Maria McAndrew running the centre court with ease and finding the Oldham shooters all too easily.

At half time the score was 37-27.
