Oldham bring home another win in Premier League

29/10/2015

Oldham Netball Club made the long trip to Bath worthwhile on Sunday, coming home with a 59-48 win and all 5 points.

Oldham were depleted due to national commitments for a number of players but did welcome back experienced shooter Krista Enziano after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Oldham started well despite the journey and a strong defensive unit of Emma Dovey, Abby Tyrrell and Kerry Almond pressured the Bath shooters into errors and missed shots, snapping up any rebounds which the away side's centre court quickly gave to the shooters who coolly slotted home for a healthy lead at the break.

Oldham let vital points slip with a draw at home

13/10/2015

Oldham let vital points slip on Sunday in a 43-43 draw at home to The Downs.
Oldham started strongly, as they have done in their other games so far this season. Kerry Almond and Emma Dovey were causing issues for the away side's attack with their presence and strong rebounding, being backed up by Jodie Gibson at WD, who was stifling the through court work for the visitors. Some quick interchanges from the centre court and strong shooting from the, by now usual, pairing of Kathryn Turner and Amy Clinton allowed Oldham to take a commanding 16-10 lead into quarter time.

The same team came out for the second quarter and the flow continued with Gabby Marshall strong in centre and Maria McAndrew running hard to keep the feeds coming into the shooters. Clinton and Turner were performing under intense pressure from the experienced Downs defensive pairing and the lead continued with some fine defensive work from Gibson and Marshall. Oldham took a half time lead of 28-19.

Coach Debbie Hallas opted to bring Abby Tyrrell on to GD and Amy Neild into WA, moving Maria McAndrew into C. The changes worked initially, but errors were starting to creep into the home side's play with some uncharacteristic sloppy play. A scrappy quarter allowed The Downs to pull it back and take five goals on the run to cut the lead to 36-33 at the break.

Marshall and Dovey re-entered the court at C and GD respectively for the last quarter but the errors continued with The Downs bridging the gap even further to edge into the lead with a few minutes to go. Oldham pulled out an intercept and drew level but couldn't quite take the lead back, finishing up with a draw, 43-43.
It's three points gained, but the loss of concentration could prove costly come the end of the season and coach Hallas was rightly disappointed in her side's inability to keep the lead under pressure. "I was pleased with the start we made, however, we struggled with our decision making when the game became tight. The Downs had two good runs in the third and fourth quarter but we didn’t use our experience to halt this. It was a game of dominant defences and young shooting ends. I was pleased how we stood upto it but I think having many players playing in the Next Generation competition the day before, it took its toll on us in the end.”
Starting seven: GS A Clinton GA K Turner WA M McAndrew C G Marshall WD J Gibson. GD E Dovey GK K Almond. Subs: A Neild A Tyrrell.

Next match for Oldham is away to Team Bath on the 25th October.

Oldham new this game was going to be tough so they needed to get their game plan right. The team looked focussed going into the warm up and ready to go. Oldham lost the toss for who’s first centre it is, so Tameside started the game off. Oldham managed to turn Tameside’s first centre over and going 2-0 up in the early stages of the game with Lucy Stevenson on point as usual. In fact Oldham turned over Tameside’s first 5 centre’s which is a superb effort and particularly because of the pressure Rachael Taylor applies on the centre pass defence set ups. Jess Dale was a force to be reckoned with at the back for Oldham, turning the ball over and applying a lot of pressure. Oldham scored 8 unanswered goals in the first quarter taking the game away from Tameside’s reach winning the quarter 20 goals to 6.

Oldham continue flying start to the season!

6/10/2015

Oldham Netball Club continued their flying start to the season in Sunday with a 58-42 win away at Turnford in the National Premier League.

The red and blue side hit the court on fire, quickly opening up a 8-0 lead courtesy of a fine defensive performance and some clinical shooting. Once Turnford finally got on the board Oldham continue the pressure to stretch to an 18-6 lead at quarter time.

Coach Debbie Hallas took the opportunity to rotate her squad and give valuable court time to all members of the squad, with Amy Neild and Abby Tyrrell taking to the court. The changes did little to halt the away sides flow and they moved into 35-14 lead at the half.

More changes followed which slowed Oldham down but they were never looking likely to lose with the shooting accuracy in top form.

Turnford had a better second half but Oldham were too good and too far out of sight to catch up with any real significance, even with more changes for the final quarter.

All players got quality court time and Hallas was rightly happy "We got off to a flyer which gave me a great opportunity to ensure all the players had good game time early into our season. Turnford selected Amy Clinton as the player of the match and I couldn’t agree more. She was consistent and was splitting well inside the circle. Next Sunday should provide us with tough opposition when we face The Downs of Surrey.”

MOM Victoria Austin

First away game of the season saw Oldham travelling to Deeside. Oldham arrived in full force with 12 players. It is going to be a difficult choice for coach Ashworth each week as there are a lot of players competing for positions this year, so it is important the coaches get the chance to see who is performing. Oldham lost their first centre, which wasn’t the start they wanted. Oldham managed to win the ball back on Deeside’s centre pass and started to take the game away. With Lucy Stevenson and Victoria Austin on point in the shooting circle, it was difficult for the Deeside defence to keep up with them. Oldham took the ball through the court with some speed and took care of every pass. Oldham turned the ball over a fantastic 14 times in the first quarter, mainly by Taylor Cullen who read the ball very well and predicted movement of the Deeside’s attack. A great start for Oldham winning the first quarter 26-8.

Changes were made going into the second quarter with Rebecca Hope coming on at WA, Gemma McDermott at GD, Katie Bodha at WD and Cullen to C. Oldham started this quarter well. Although Oldham needed some stronger passing and better timing with their attacking movement, they kept the intensity and did not get complacent. With the goal machines Austin and Stevenson, Oldham continued to score the goals. Oldham won the second quarter and took the overall score to 48-13 at half time.

Oldham Premier Squad off to a convincing start!

1/10/2015

Picture
Oldham Netball Club's premier league side kicked off the defence of their title with a convincing 75-27 win over Hucclecote.

The home side started strongly and never looked like getting anything less than a win. Strong defence in the opening quarter coupled with a fluent mid court and forging shooting circle opened up a 20-6 lead at the break, which allowed coach Debbie Hallas to make a few changes.

The changes did little to halt the reigning champions and they pushed further ahead. Laura Malcolm was running the show in the mid court and shooters Kathryn Turner and Amy Clinton were clinical with their shooting to open up to a 45-11 lead at half time.

Hallas again rang the changes introducing four new players, with 16 year old Lucy Stevenson making her debut at goal shooter. The changes slowed the scoring down for the home side and it was a much more even affair in this quarter.

The final quarter saw more changes and a huge final push from the home side to get more goals on the board and come away with a routine win.

Coach Hallas said "It was a great start to the season and to blow away some early season rustiness. I would have preferred a more testing game but Hucclecote are going through a rebuilding phase and blooding some youngsters. It was an opportunity to give Lucy Stevenson her Premier League debut, she is certainly a talent for the future. Jodie Gibson and Laura Malcolm put in impressive performances, alongside Kathryn Turner who was my player of the match."
