Oldham were going into this game with confidence after beating Chester last weekend. It is always going to be a tough fixture against Tameside and the girls knew they had to put a great performance out today. Oldham looked strong with the squad they arrived with and were hoping that they would take their strengths on to the court. It was the last game of the year until January so Oldham wanted to finish on a high. The first quarter Oldham started slow, mistakes creeping in and the attack taking a bit of time to gel and work together. A couple of mistakes such as repossession and cross court balls being intercepted it was goal for goal. There was no stopping the Tameside shooting duo who were shooting very well. Oldham defended Tameside centre pass very well creating a solid wall, which allowed Oldham to convert on Tameside’s centre passes and gain a lead. With some superb defending by Victoria Austin and some great feeds into the circle made by Amy Neild, Oldham started to pull away and won the first quarter 17-9.
One change was made going into the second quart, Rachael Taylor made an appearance at C replacing Rebecca Hope, who had just recently come back from a injury what prevented from Hope from playing for over a month. Amy Clinton continued to pop the ball in the net with a ‘swoosh’ every time scoring 95% of her attempts in the first and second quarter. Oldham played some excellent netball and made it clear they wanted nothing less than a win today. In the first part of this second quarter Oldham scored 7 unanswered goals. Austin continued to make it difficult for Tameside’s attack on the centre pass and through the court. Clinton took a knock, but was soon back into the game. Oldham managed to only allow Tameside to score 4 goals in this quarter to Oldham’s 20! End of second quarter the score overall was 37-13.
Third quarter introduced Taylor Cullen at C, Abigail Tyrell at GD, Susie Armstrong at GK, Rachael Taylor at WD, Victoria Austin at WA and Amy Neild to GA. Neild started the quarter on fire creating space, making excellent drives and feeding some superb balls into the shooting machine Clinton. Abigail Tyrell came into the game after playing 3 quarters for the National Prem Team and played some excellent netball. Susie Armstrong and Taylor Cullen also made their debut with the Prem squad. Oldham played to their strengths of short, sharp netball and continued to pull the game away to a victory. Tyrell and Armstrong were a strong force at the back making it difficult for anything to come through. Score at the end of the third quarter was 58-22.
Going into the final quarter, Hope came back on at C. It was important that Oldham didn’t get complacent and continue to perform well and work hard. Oldham continued to play some flowing netball and scored 9 unanswered goal in the 4th quarter. Hope was back to her usual self after her injury and feeding some great balls into Clinton who, as always, finished them off! An all round excellent game fro Oldham to finish the year off. The season is back to the beginning again now after Christmas with Oldham’s first game being against Bury. final score 82-29.
Suzy Chapman quote: “The focus going into this game was to support each other, work as a team and back each other up and they certainly did that. I couldn’t have been more please with everyone’s performance. They were really up for the game and put everything they had on to the court for each other. There was some impressive performances particularly from Amy Neild, Victoria Austin and Amy Clinton. Amy Clinton scored 75 out of 80 attempts!! We wanted to finish the year off on a high and we certainly did that!”
Our next game is against YW Bury after Christmas.
