Player of the Match – Zoe Mallinder
This was Oldham’s first game in the Northwest Champs league for a few years. It is a really exciting year this year with so many talented players playing in both the Northwest Prem and the Northwest Champs league. Oldham started very well and turned Chester’s first centre pass over and managed to score off the turnover. This allowed to Oldham to convert 2 goals and get an early lead.  Oldham continued their good from in the first quarter and the defence trio Ebbie Danson-Chappell, Taylor Cullen and Zoe Maillinder were a force to be reckoned with. They got 15 interceptions in this quarter which is amazing. Score at the end of the first quarter was 21-8 to Oldham.

Apart from Luci Stevenson and Chloe Shepherd switching round, the team stayed the same going into the second quarter. Again Oldham started well and got 5 unanswered goals early in the quarter.  Victoria Austin created some fabulous feeds into the shooters allowing them to comfortably put the ball in the net.  The red and blue side continued to set up effectively and work together as a team, which was great to see so early in the season. Score at the end of the second quarter was 39-18.

Third quarter introduced Sarah Brennan to GA, Lucy Shepherd to WA, Ebbie Danson-Chappell to C, Victoria Austin to WD and Joely Ferris to GD. Oldham adapted to the changes really well and made no room for errors.  Ferris and Mallinder worked hard in the circle and applied the pressure on their attack.  With a few changes to their centre passes, Oldham started to create a straight line path of the ball getting to the shooters. Oldham scored 6 unanswered goals at the beginning of this quarter.  Score at the end of the third quarter was 54-29.

Going into the final quarter, Danson-Chappell went back to WD, Stevenson came on at GS, Lucy Shepherd to C and Amelia Hall to WA. Oldham again reacted to the changes straight away and worked well together. Oldham were still turning over ball, but didn’t convert them all, similarly in each quarter this was happening. A great start though for Oldham and the game finished 70-40.

“I was really impressed with all players today and how they have started the season. We wanted to work on the set plays we had been doing at training and also play as a team and we certainly did this”.
