Final : Oldham 40 Tameside 34In a repeat of the Regional final Oldham took on local rivals Tameside in the national under 16 final. It started goal for goal but the defence started to get on top of the Oldham shooters and edged into a four goal lead by the end of the first quarter,
11-7.
In the second quarter Victoria Austin replaced Bryony Rhodes but Oldham struggled with the physicality of the game and several balls went astray in attack. At one point Tameside built a seven goal lead, but Oldham started to settle and built each attack. As they started to find shooter Clinton more easily and pulled two goals back in the quarter to go into the half time break 20-18.
The two Amy’s in attack settled in and found their range, at the other end the Tameside shooters struggled to score with Dale picking up the rebounds and sending back into attack, Oldham fought all the way back to level the game at the end of the third quarter 29 all.
In the final quarter it was everything to play for but Oldham had the bit between their teeth, they played with grit and determination, Victoria Austin was a calming influence feeding the shooters with consistency. In an attempt to stop the flow the Tameside goal keeper was stood off the court for persistent contact, but it was down to Oldham’s perseverance that they finally took out the game 40-34. This means they become the first under 15 to win the under 16 national championships.
