Oldham’s scheduled Premier League fixture against Leyton fell foul of the weather as the London based team were unable to travel.
Oldham 43 Hull Chevrons 50 – Northern League Division One
Hull based Chevrons made the journey across the M62 to Hathershaw for the Northern League fixture. With Oldham in 2nd and Hull on their heels in 3rd place it was sure to be a close encounter. It was Chevrons who were first out of the blocks and they developed an early lead with the home side struggling to find any consistency. Chevrons took the quarter 11-7.
The second quarter saw Oldham grab the game by the scruff of the neck, leading the way was wing defence Olivia Jarvis who seemed to be on a personal mission to stop the ball reaching the Hull shooters. Time after time Jarvis turned the ball over with some impressive interceptions, meanwhile captain Suzy Chapman was leading the way in attack driving to the edge of the circle to feed young shooters Amy Clinton and Amy Nield. However, Oldham couldn’t quite maintain the consistency and lost the quarter 15-14.
The lack of consistency continued in the third quarter and Oldham really started to struggle, the young shooters struggled against the experienced defenders and the opposition umpire gave them no protection while being unfairly man-handled. With a time out and injusy to Suzy Chapman Oldham reshuffled with Jess Whitworth coming on at wing attack and Issy McGlashen entering the fray at wing defence, while Jarvis moved up to centre. Oldham only managed to put five goals on the board while Chevrons added another 11.
For the final quarter Oldham reverted to their starting line-up in an attempt to break down Chevrons 11 goal lead. Goal Keeper Dani Bloomfield led from the back turning the ball over and driving the ball back into attack, she was aided by goal defence Amber Hazelton who put in some great groundwork to stop the flow of the Chevrons attack. Changing ends helped Oldham’s cause with the physical Chevrons defence not being allowed to get away with the contact. Young centre Rebecca Hope worked well with Jarvis and Chapman in centre court and they found a fluent flow into shooters Clinton and Nield who consistently put the ball in the net and led Oldham to win the quarter 17-13. Unfortunately, the home side couldn’t overturn the lead built by Chevrons but only lost by seven in the end 50-43.
Captain Suzy commented: “Overall I was pleased with the girls and in particular Olivia Jarvis who was our player of the match, however, we lack consistency through the four quarters and this is something we need to work on in training.”
“Our shooters didn’t get much protection from their umpire and this showed in quite an uneven playing field, we only scored seven in the first quarter and five in the third, while in the second and fourth we scored 14 and 17 respectively.”
Squad: A Clinton, A Nield, S Chapman, R Hope, O Jarvis, A Hazelton, D Bloomfield, J Whitworth, I McGlashen
