Yendys Tournament

5/8/2013

Oldham Under 14’s finished the season in style with victory at Yendy’s tournament on Sunday. Oldham looked like a team that meant business from the off with an awesome 19 -1 win against Ryland U14’s. Oldham went on to record five more group game wins against, Oaksway, Ribble, Barr Beacon, Parkside and Imagine 8. The undefeated record and superior goal difference placed Oldham at the top of the league and set up a semi-final against 4th placed Bury.

Oldham made light work of their opponents and recorded an impressive 10-1 win to progress to the final. Local rivals Tameside had beaten Parkside in the other semi-final to set up a derby game for the top honours.

As the crowds gathered around court Oldham looked ready to do the business, Tameside had other ideas and as the whistle blew they came out with all guns blazing. With three quick unanswered goals Tameside looked to be on a charge and Oldham looked shell shocked and struggled to put any meaningful passes together.

A spark was needed to fire Oldham and they got one from the superb Bayley Whittaker (WD) who turned the ball over at the edge of the Oldham circle and began a move that ended with Oldham posting their first goal of the game. Within 60 seconds Oldham had pulled level with Susie Armstrong and Ellie Fitzhugh in defence continually thwarting Tameside’s forwards and releasing the ball back down court. At half time Oldham had a 5-4 lead. The second half was a display of pure awesomeness with 6ft shooter Lucy Stevenson converting 100% of her chances in the final. The forward trio of Morgan Evans, Jasmine Newell and Amelia Hall worked tirelessly and accurately fed the ball into Lucy to convert. The Final score was 11 -5 and Oldham received a great round of applause from the entire crowd at the final whistle.

Oldham Triumphant at Dominoes Netball Tournament

5/8/2013

Oldham put together a team with a mixture of youth and experience to gain some pre-season match play in the annual Dominoes Netball Tournament. The popular event that attracts teams for all over the country took place at Wright Robinson Sports Arena, the home of Manchester Thunder.
Picture
Oldham started with an experienced side with National League players Krista Enziano and Kathryn Turner catching the eye as they swept past Norfolk United 14-3. Next up were Trafford Juniors and the Oldham youngsters were thrust into action. Abby Tyrrell made an immediate impact with several turnovers in defence, while Rebecca Hope impressed at centre with some driving runs through the court and quick feeds into shooters Amy Clinton and Amy Neild.

The squad rotation worked in Oldham’s favour as they cruised through the rounds beating Beehive, Brigg, Hills, Retro and Chester along the way. In topping their group in the round robin, Oldham were through to the knockout stages of the cup competition and faced Macclesfield who finished fourth in their group.

Nottingham City Netball Club progressed through their first knockout game and were a tricky opponent in the quarter final as Oldham seemed to take their foot off the pedal. In a close first half it wasn’t until half time that Oldham moved through the gears, Maria McAndrew came into her own and very lively in attack playing quick one-twos with Rachel Henry to feed the shooters who started to slot the ball home with ease.

Having already beaten the juniors, Trafford seniors looked a tougher prospect having progressed to the semi-final. After an initial physical contest Oldham were clearly too strong and at half time made changes with 15 year olds Clinton and Hope coming on to finish the job and keep legs fresh for the final.

Home team Dominoes were the opposition for the final, also National League team and recently promoted to division two it looked a well matched game. It started that way but Oldham soon started to move through the gears with McAndrew in great form driving the attack. While Kerry Almond and Abby Tyrrell were solid at the back. Ebbie Danson-Chappell came on at half time to mark the Dominoes wing attack who was having an impact in the Dominoes attack. The tactic worked plus with McAndrew, Henry, Turner and Enziano on fire in attack Oldham went on to win comfortably 11-4.

Coach Debbie Hallas said: “It was great to work with a squad with such a mixture today, the youngsters from our under 15’s squad gained valuable experience playing with members of the Premier League squad and certainly didn’t look out of place. The future is certainly looking very bright.”

Match Report
Oldham Faclons (under 11s) took part in their second netball tournament of the season and making full use of squad rotation scored 63 goals to win all 5 leagues games, then beating Denton in the semi final 9:5 which set them up in the final against Tameside.

Both Oldham and Tameside started the final with strength and determination but the defensive discipline of Harrison, Cusack and McDermott resulted in Oldham overturning two Tameside centres, that along with the agile movement of the attacking partnership of Fletcher and Tudor gave Oldham a 4:2 lead at half time.

Oldham kept their team unchnaged going into the second half and the speed, movement and accurate passing from the two middle court players McKee and Rhodes ensured that the ball was played into the shooters at pace and Oldhams lead quickly became 6:2. Tameside continued with their positive play and quickly scored from their centre to bring to the game to 6:3. With two minutes still to play the respective defences became tighter giving the attacking players little space to position for a shot. With seconds to spare a superb run from Fletcher and a defence splitting pass McKee resulted in a goal from under the post and Oldham winning the final 7:3.

Oldhams three attacking players displayed very accurate shooting during the tournament with Fletcher 65% shooting accuracy, Tudor 65% and Rhodes with 100%.

Final : Oldham 40 Tameside 34In a repeat of the Regional final Oldham took on local rivals Tameside in the national under 16 final. It started goal for goal but the defence started to get on top of the Oldham shooters and edged into a four goal lead by the end of the first quarter,
11-7.

In the second quarter Victoria Austin replaced Bryony Rhodes but Oldham struggled with the physicality of the game and several balls went astray in attack. At one point Tameside built a seven goal lead, but Oldham started to settle and built each attack. As they started to find shooter Clinton more easily and pulled two goals back in the quarter to go into the half time break 20-18.

The two Amy’s in attack settled in and found their range, at the other end the Tameside shooters struggled to score with Dale picking up the rebounds and sending back into attack, Oldham fought all the way back to level the game at the end of the third quarter 29 all.

In the final quarter it was everything to play for but Oldham had the bit between their teeth, they played with grit and determination, Victoria Austin was a calming influence feeding the shooters with consistency. In an attempt to stop the flow the Tameside goal keeper was stood off the court for persistent contact, but it was down to Oldham’s perseverance that they finally took out the game 40-34. This means they become the first under 15 to win the under 16 national championships.

Game 5 : Oldham 44 Weston Park 28
Oldham progressed into round three to face their toughest opposition so far in Weston Park from Southampton. Led by England under 19 coach Jan Crabtree, this was sure to be a good test for the Oldham side. The start as expected was goal for goal over the first few minutes, but two great intercepts by centre Rebecca Hope drove Oldham forward feeding shooter Amy Clinton with ease. The first quarter finished 16-8 and Oldham had the bit between their teeth.

With no changes going into the second quarter Oldham continued in the same vein, the defence of Jess dale, Abby Tyrrell and Issy McGlashen were on top and turned the ball over on several occasions to set up the attack. By the end of the quarter they had built up a 15 goal lead 28-13.

Coach Pam Hazelton made her first change of the match with Ebbie Danson-Chappell replacing McGlashen at wing defence, who started lively. However, Oldham lost their concentration as Weston Park scored four in a row at one point and reduced Oldham’s lead to just nine. Enter Jess Dale who took two fantastic intercepts and also brought two turnovers. Oldham found some form and moved through the gears to take it out to an eleven goal lead, 34-23.

The final quarter brought much needed changes to freshen up the Oldham attack, Victoria Austin came on at wing attack while Rhianna Egan came on at goal attack. McGlashen returned to the wing defence position. The changes worked for Oldham as they found their attacking flow once again, Dale was still on form in the circle, while at the other end Clinton was clinical under the post. The final score was 44-28.

Game 6 : Oldham 34 Huddersfield Giants 18
Oldham faced Huddersfield Giants for a second time in two days as the Yorkshire team progressed through their group, whoever won the game was through to the final later at 5pm so it was all to play for. Oldham didn’t have it all their own way to start with but as the quarter progressed the ever reliable Amy Clinton put the ball in the net, ably backed up by Amy Neild to give Oldham a five goal lead at the end of the first quarter, 10-5.

The Giants were proving a much tougher opposition second time round with the nerves seemingly getting to Oldham. They made several unforced errors with Giants making it difficult to get the ball through the court. Oldham slightly extended their lead to 18-11 at the half time break.

The third quarter started slowly with both teams wasting possession, The Giants put pressure on shooter Amy Clinton which led to less attempts on goal, Oldham edged the quarter 7-3 to give an accumulative score of 25-14.

In the final quarter coach Pam Hazelton brought on fresh legs with Ebbie Danson-Chappell coming on at centre and Victoria Austin took the wing attack patch. It certainly did the trick as Oldham powered on, once again Jess Dale was a rock at the back. It was Oldham’s best quarter as the Giants faded and Oldham went on to win 34-18.

Starting 7: GS Amy Clinton, GA Amy Neild, WA Bryony Rhodes, C Rebecca Hope, WD, Issy McGlashen, GD Jess Dale, GK Abigail Tyrrell

Game 3 : Oldham 43 Riverside 13
After a four hour break Oldham were back on court facing a Riverside team on their own turf. Oldham took time to get back into their stride making several unforced errors in the first few minutes. However, with some dogged determination from Rebecca Hope, Bryony Rhodes and Rhianna Egan they were clearly too much for Riverside and built an early lead of nine goals to one as the first quarter concluded.

The second quarter saw coach Pam Hazelton totally rotate her squad, Imogen Campbell getting her first taste of netball for the day at goal attack, Victoria Austin came on at wing defence, Ebbie Danson-Chappell replaced Issy McGlashen who moved back to goal keeper. An early time out was called after an accidental clash between Danson-Chappell and the umpire. The umpire was unable to continue and a reserve had to be called. The game continued in the same vein with both sides giving away possession too easily and not capitalising on each other’s mistakes. The quarter score was seven all, with Oldham still holding an eight goal lead 16-8.

The third quarter Megan Allingan on at wing attack, Danson-Chappell moved to centre and Amy Neild replaced Campbell at goal attack. Issy McGlashen took the game by the scruff of the neck and with two outstanding intercepts she drove the Oldham team forward, the team followed her lead and scored an impressive 15 goals in the quarter, going into the final quarter with a 19 goal lead 31-12.

In the final quarter Amy Clinton got her first rest of the day, with Rhianna Egan and Amy Neild forging a new shooting partnership. This gave Oldham a new dynamic with no aerial presence they worked the ball around the circle. They really took the game to Riverside, whose challenge fell away, only scoring one goal in the whole quarter. The final score of 43-13 was flattering for Oldham who didn’t put in their most convincing performance but they did what they had to and ground out a result.

Starting 7: GS Amy Clinton, GA Rhianna Egan, WA Bryony Rhodes, C Rebecca Hope, WD, Issy McGlashen, GD Abigail Tyrrell, GK Jess Dale
Bench: Megan Allingan, Vicky Austin, Imogen Campbell, Ebbie Danson-Chappell, Amy Neild, Bryony Rhodes
Player of the match: Ebbie Danson-Chappell

Game 4 : Oldham 44 CD Phoenix 25
As Oldham progressed through the rounds and the opposition became tougher, they took on CD Phoenix from Sussex and it was clear from the start that Oldham were not going to have it all their own way. Jess Dale and Issy McGlashen worked the ball well through the court and into attack but Oldham couldn’t seem to get to grips with their tall shooter Amy Clinton being double marked. They slowly got to grips with it as they won the quarter 11-5.

Quarter two began much the same way, CD Phoenix scored a couple of goals in a row and got their tails up. Dale and Tyrrell swopped patches and despite the former turning the ball over several times Oldham couldn’t capitalise with several balls being thrown straight off the back line. The quarter finished 20-12 with some stern words to follow from coach Pam Hazelton.

With no changes going into the third quarter, Oldham stepped up their game with the ball flowing more easily as Amy Neild got into the game and worked around the edge of the circle drawing the Phoenix defence. Oldham built their lead to 13 with the quarter finishing 33-20.

Hazelton freshened her line up in the final quarter bringing on Ebbie Danson-Chappell to wing defence with McGlashen moving back to goal defence, Victoria Austin replaced Bryony Rhodes at wing attack. It seemed to do the trick with McGlashen and Danson-Chappell turning the ball over with regularity. Oldham seized the opportunity this time and moved on to win 44-25.

Starting 7: GS Amy Clinton, GA Amy Neild, WA Bryony Rhodes, C Rebecca Hope, WD, Issy McGlashen, GD Jess Dale, GK Abigail Tyrrell
Bench: Megan Allingan, Vicky Austin, Imogen Campbell, Ebbie Danson-Chappell, Rhianna Egan, Bryony Rhodes
Player of the match: Amy Clinton
