With Oldham’s last game rearranged against Trafford, Oldham were ready for the tough game expected against Warrington. There were a few new faces in their squad due to some players playing up for the Prem squad. Oldham took their first centre to goal with a promising start, but unfortunately it didn’t continue as Oldham could not get the ball into the shooting circle. Warrington scored 7 goals before Oldham got their second on the score sheet. Oldham couldn’t take possession off Warrington and they continued to pull away from the red and blue side. At the end of the first quarter Warrington were in the lead 14 goals to 7.
Oldham made some needed changes and brought on the 3 under 16s on for their North West Prem debut. Emma Fairclough came on at GK, Lucy Shepherd at WA and Isobel Hallam at GS. Oldham started strong with Hallam on form with her shooting and Shepherd injecting some energy and speed into Oldham’s attack. The first 3 goals of the quarter were for Oldham. Apart from letting Warrington back into the quarter scoring 4 goals in a row, Oldham definitely dominated the play this quarter and came back hard at Warrington by winning the quarter by one goal, but Oldham still trailing behind with the score being 24-18 to Warrington at the end of the second round.
Third quarter the team stayed the same and the game was goal for goal early on. When Hallam got the ball she didn’t miss one shot and neither did Sarah Brennan. Oldham continued to make many unforced errors and not taking care of the ball, which allowed Warrington to have the upper hand. The score at the end of the third quarter was 37-30 to Warrington as they pulled a goal back taking it within 7 again.
Fourth quarter Oldham side changed, Katie Bodha came on at WD and Rachael Fitszimmons came to GD. Oldham allowed Warrington to play their own way and get 2/3 goals in a row. Although Oldham had a good run in the last few minutes, but it was to little to late for the red and blue side. However not all disappointing as there were some great netball played and particular great performances by the 3 under 16 players. Final Score 49-38 to Warrington
Suzy Ashworth quote:
“After going down by 7 goals in the first quarter it was always going to be tough to come back against a side as good as Warrington. We didn’t take care of the ball and we allowed Warrington to play their own game. However, I am really pleased with how great the under 16s came on and performed and didn’t let the pressure affect them. They really stepped up. A lot to take from the game.”
