With the team talk complete and the warm up well under way, Oldham were out in force once again with 11 players in the red and blue kit. Amy Neild was back with the North West Premier League squad for this game after begin part of the National Premier League squad for the last few games. Warrington had also not lost a game in the league so far, so a lot of pressure on both sides to maintain their winning streak. Oldham wanted to maintain their pressure on Warrington's centre passes like they did against Trafford, but Oldham allowed Warrington to score off their first centre pass. However the red and blue side were hungry to score off their own centre passes and continued to keep possession all the way until the ball went into the net. With the goal machine in at GS (Lucy Stevenson), she was on fire once again scoring 100% of her shots. Oldham passed to hands a few times and was complacent with the ball and their movement, but they managed to win the first quarter 17-14. |
Going into the second quarter Kim Meadows came in to GA, Victoria Austin went to WA, Neild to C, Susie Armstrong to GD and Jess Dale came on at GK. Oldham settled quite quickly despite all the changes and scored off Warrington's first 2 centre passes. A few long diagonal passes were creeping in to Oldham's play and losing possession as a result of this, so Oldham had to change what they were doing. Warrington applied a lot of pressure to Oldham's attack and were creating space in their attack leaving Oldham's defence having to change their play. Oldham won by 4 goals in this quarter taking the overall score to 30-23.
Going into the third quarter Austin went back to GA, Ebbie Danson-Chappell to WA, Katie Bodha to C, Ellie Fitzhugh to WD and Gemma McDermott to GD. Oldham turned a lot of ball over in the early stages of this quarter and scored from them and their centres. The combination worked for Oldham and they maintained their intensity throughout the quarter. Oldham increased their lead to 45-33.
Last quarter Meadows came back on at GA, Bodha to WA, Neil back on at C, Amber to GD and Armstrong to GK. Oldham let Warrington to play their own game and this created errors and mistakes for the red and blue side. Oldham had limited options in attack and needed to get the rebounds in defence. Oldham lost their first 4 centre passes. Unfortunately Oldham let Warrington win this quarter by one goal, but overall they won with the final score 56-45.
Suzy Ashworth quote: "It wasn't a pretty game from our side, but we got the win. The team didn't seem to settle into the game, which was frustrating. However there was some great play and shooting stats were impressive once again. Well done to Lucy for getting player of the match".
Next game is against LSA on Sunday at home 3pm.
