Oldham travelled to Trafford wanting to remain unbeaten. Oldham knew Trafford were going to be a tough fixture with the experienced players they have in their squad. Oldham had a promising start by scoring the first goal from Trafford’s centre pass. However from then on Oldham made hard work of the first quarter unable to feed the accurate ball into the shooting circle, rushing the ball through the court and not converting the turnovers made. It was a new squad for Oldham with Alice Travis and Rachael Taylor coming into the team for this game, so it took a while for Oldham to settle. Score after the first quarter Oldham was trailing 10 goals to Trafford’s 12.
Coach Suzy Chapman opted to make some changes early in the game seeing Taylor coming to C, Sarah Brennan coming on a GA and Taylor Cullen going to WD. Oldham needed to adapt to the new shooting duo very quickly. Oldham took the first centre to goal in flow and showed a promising start to the second quarter. Brennan working the front of the circle well and putting the ball in the net in whatever position she was in lifted the Oldham side and they scored 5 goals in a row on 2 occasions during this period. Taylor and Rebecca Hope found their form and passed some quick accurate balls in to Travis, who popped them in under the post. Travis scoring 100% and Brennan taking 14 opportunities in this quarter and only missing one, the shooters found the spot and lifted the side in this quarter. Some superb netball being played and some excellent defence from Taylor, Gemma McDermott and Abigail Tyrell. Oldham were leading at half time 31-23.
Some more changes were made by coach Chapman, Neild came on at WA and Victoria Austin took the WD position. Chapman was preparing for more changes as Tyrell had an injury to her neck, but fortunately she was okay to continue and no changes were needed in the strong defence unit. After a little confusion from the table on who’s centre pass it was, Oldham did not let Trafford come back at them and pushed their lead even more scoring the first 2 goals of the quarter. Neild settled into the WA positions straight and was feeding some superb balls into Travis. Taylor remained strong in the C position and was a calming force for the Oldham side, which led them to victory in the third quarter with score now 51-33 to Oldham.
Going into the final quarter, Cullen came back on at C against her old side and immediately made an impact with some excellent defence and some more controlled feeds going into Travis and Brennan who had switched their positions for the final quarter. With Travis now out at GA, Oldham settled quickly and worked the ball well to the post. The final quarter was goal for goal on many occasions, but Oldham’s defence force with Tyrell there making many interceptions, Oldham managed to pull the score back so they were in front. Winning that quarter 15-11. After a rocky start, Oldham excelled throughout the final 3 quarters and a superb win again, final score 66-44.
Suzy Chapman quote:
“Another rocky start and the first quarter loss, we need to settle into the game quicker. We had some new faces in the squad so it was difficult for some players to adjust without having the practice with them at training; however the second and third quarter performance was impressive. I was particularly impressed with Sarah Brennan and Taylor Cullen’s performances in this game. Sarah came on and changed the game in the second quarter and Taylor’s ground work in defence was superb. We have a competition going throughout the season and it is getting more difficult to choose the winners in each category as the players a performing very well, I suppose it’s a good dilemma to be in!”
Our next game is against Warrington in a couple of weeks.
