Oldham v Bury NW Prem league Oldham 35 - Bury 43 Team: GS Lucy Stevenson GA Isobel Hallam WA Lucy Shepherd C Ebbie Danson-Chappell WD Amber Hazelton GD Gemma McDermott GK Zoe Mallinder Vanessa Luamba Player of the Match - Gemma McDermott | Oldham arrived at Bury Grammar with a depleted team having only 8 players for the match v Bury. Oldham knew it was going to be a really big ask having had a tough game against them last time. However the last time Oldham played them it was in their favour winning the game 45-32. Early into the first quarter Oldham's missed shots and errors crept in, which allowed Bury to get the advantage and go into the lead 7 goals to 3. Oldham managed to stay close to their score line though and pulled it back by playing some good patient netball. Oldham was trailing by 3 goals at the end of the first quarter with the score 8-11 to Bury. |
Second quarter Vanessa Luamba came on at GK. Oldham defence did well to turn the ball over and apply pressure on the Bury attack, but at times Oldham attack could not get the ball through the court against the pressure from the Bury defence unit. However Oldham managed to pull it back with, again, some patient netball and some tight defending and drew this quarter. Bury were still in the lead by 3 goals 20 -17.
Third quarter the red and blue side switched the shooters round Isobel Hallam went to GS and Lucy Stevenson to GA. Bury was first on the score board in this quarter converting their first centre pass, but Oldham responded and scored off theirs. With having only 8 players, Oldham were giving everything, but it was starting to take its toll on the girls. Gemma McDermott continued to lead by example going for everything and motivating her team mates. But Bury got the upper hand in this quarter and won the quarter by 2 goals taking the overall score to 33-28.
After a determined team talk and with only 5 goals in it, it was all to play for going into the final quarter. Oldham knew it was the last 15 minutes to turn the game around. They were first to score and continued to score off their centre's until later on the quarter when they allowed Bury to score 3 and then 4 goals in a row. Oldham finished the quarter strong and scored 2 goals before the final whistle, but the game went to Bury after winning this quarter by another 3 goals it took the lead out to 7 goals with the final score 43-35.

"It was going to be a big ask for the team with only 8 players, but I am proud of how they played and they give everything, it just wasn't going to be enough against a very strong opponent".
