Oldham Netball Club's Premier League side were back to winning ways on Sunday with a convincing 79-36 win over Southampton based side Blades.
Oldham are renowned for having a slow start to games and today was to be no different. The home side took over five minutes to take the lead and get a grip of the game. However, once this happened there was no stopping the quick free flowing netball that Oldham are famous for playing. The defence started to take control of the Blades attack preventing the ball getting into any real shooting opportunities. Turnovers were punished as the ball quickly found shooters Kathryn Turner and Helen Housby. Oldham came out winners 19-12 after a high scoring first quarter.
Oldham were keen to push the lead even further in the second quarter and Oldham went on a flurry of nine unanswered goals. The Oldham attack seemed unstoppable and the ball was finding the in form shooters with ease. At the other end the defensive pressure from Kerry Almond, Dovey and Webster forced mistakes from the away side. At half time the lead had extended to 37-20.

Coach Hallas opted to make some changes at the break, bringing Krista Enziano, Beth Cobden and Jodie Gibson onto court. Jodie Gibson was back in the red and blue kit after a two years away at Loughborough University. The third quarter saw Oldham really push down on the accelerator and punish errors made by Blades. Turnovers were being made all over the court and Oldham were keen to add goals to the board. The third quarter saw Oldham score an impressive 21 goals and extend the lead to 58-26.
Going into the last quarter there seemed to be no stopping the home side. Again Oldham added 21 goals to the score after some great flying interceptions from dominant defenders Jodie Gibson and Georgie Webster. The work rate and commitment throughout the whole court in defence and attack stopped any fight back from the away side.
Coach Debbie Hallas said: “It is still frustrating the way we start games and against a tougher opposition we will get punished, as in our last game. However, once we turned it around we played some great netball and Blades couldn’t live with us.”
“It was good to have such a convincing win and hopefully restore some confidence in the players. It was great to have Jodie Gibson back, she gives us so many options in defence.”
