Match Report
After winning 11 league games scoring an incredible 111 goals (conceding 25) and then beating North West rivals Tameside 10:8 in a brilliant semi final (that had to be settled in extra time) set Oldham Falcons against Turnford A in a North vs South final in the Pontins 2013 Under 11s Netball Cup.
Oldham had played Turnford earlier in the day and knew that the final would be a tough game and they would have to play with precision in order to break down the solid Turnford defence. Oldham started the game with speed scoring from the first their centre but quickly found themselves 1:2 down due to Turnford taking advantage of a dropped ball. Oldham immeadiately broke back to go 2:2 and then 3:2 by holding their centre but with the nerves of the final starting to show Turnford took advantage and the first-half finished 3:5 in their favour.
Oldham changed their team going into the second half with Parker replacing the injured Harrison to form a new Oldham defensive partnership with Cusack. Turnford had first centre and scored to take them into a commanding 3:6 lead. Oldhams responded positively from their centre to take the game back to 4:6 and from Turnfords centre a brilliant turnover from Oldham saw McDermott, McKee and Rhodes driving forward and scoring to take the game to 5:6. Oldham with their centre had the opportunity to level the game and a balanced pass from Fletcher was well received by Tudor who scored to take the game 6:6.
With the crowd buzzing and the clock ticking down Turnford took their centre which was driven forward into the Oldham box but with Turnfords shooters being forced to take shots from a slightly greater distance a miss gave Oldham a back line pass which was picked up and driven forward with urgency – again a perfect pass from Fletcher into Tudor and a calm shot put Oldham back in front at 7:6. With more than one minute remaining Turnford turned the ball and put immense pressure on the Oldham defence but they just couldn’t find away through and the final whistle brought the game to a close. Oldham were champions.
Oldhams three attacking players displayed very accurate shooting during the tournament with Tuder 78%, Fletcher 78% and Rhodes 100%.
